Signs something is wrong

  • Oven that will not heat, or heat that runs away
  • One burner dead while the others work
  • Uneven cakes, or an oven that seems much hotter than the dial
  • Clicking igniter that never lights, on a gas range
  • Display dark, clock flashing, or controls that do not respond
  • Burning smell the first time a new or cleaned oven heats

Before you request a repair

Confirm the breaker and that the clock controls are not in a timed or locked mode. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas supplier or emergency services. Do not cycle the igniter, the lights, or the breaker while you still smell gas.

Electric, gas, and propane are not interchangeable

Most city kitchens are electric. A smooth-top with one dead burner is often an element or its limiter, and the other burners still working is the clue. A coil burner that will not heat may be a burned receptacle rather than the coil you can see.

Gas ranges in older houses and propane ranges on some Woodville and outlying lots fail at the igniter, the valve, or the supply. Say which fuel you have. Do not swap an electric diagnosis onto a gas range because the symptom sounds similar.

Uneven baking is often airflow or a sensor

An oven that burns the bottom and leaves the top raw may have a failed bake element, a convection fan that is not turning, or a temperature sensor that has drifted. Running a long self-clean and then finding the oven dead the next day is a pattern worth mentioning.

Foil on the bottom of the oven, or a pan covering the bake element, creates the same complaint. Look before you assume the control board. Racks that were put back in upside down also change the heat pattern.

What a gas smell requires

A brief puff when a burner lights can be normal ignition. A smell that stays in the kitchen, a hiss, or an odor near the shutoff is a reason to leave. Open no switches on the way out. Call the gas provider from outside.

After the space is cleared and the supply is confirmed safe by the people who own that problem, a range that will not light is an ordinary repair conversation. Until then it is not.

Controls, codes, and the model tag

The tag is usually in the storage drawer, on the oven frame when the door is open, or behind the lower panel. A photo of the tag and a photo of the display is the right attachment. Include whether the fault is one burner, the oven only, or the whole appliance.

Smoothtop glass that is cracked is a different decision than a burner that will not heat. Glass replacement is not a cleaning issue. Stop using a cracked top. Coverage for the address is confirmed when you send the request, and no arrival time is promised by the form.

One burner works and three do not. Where do I start?

Note which position is dead and whether it is a coil, a smoothtop, or gas. One dead electric burner is a different fault than a control that has killed the whole cooktop.

The oven smells hot the first cycle after a spill. Is it failing?

Residue burns off and smells sharp once. A smell like hot insulation, melted plastic, or electrical burning on every cycle is a reason to stop and let it cool.

I smell gas only when the burner clicks. What should I do?

If the smell clears as soon as the burner lights, mention it as an ignition note. If the smell remains or you feel unsure, leave and call the gas supplier. Do not keep clicking the igniter.

Can a bad outlet make the whole range look dead?

A tripped breaker or a loose connection can. Check the breaker once. If it trips again immediately, leave the breaker off and describe that. Do not keep resetting it.
