Signs something is wrong

  • Standing water in the tub after the cycle
  • Dishes gritty, cloudy, or still coated with food
  • Water at the door corners or on the floor underneath
  • Cycle that starts and then sits silent
  • Grinding noise from the drain or chopper area
  • White film on glass that wiping does not remove

Before you request a repair

Cancel the cycle if water is escaping onto the floor. Clean the filter if your model has one you can reach without tools. Do not remove the kickplate and reach into a live machine, and do not run another cycle on a flooded kitchen floor.

Fill, wash, and drain are different failures

If the tub never fills, the symptom is water supply or the inlet. If it fills and the arms do not turn, spray, circulation, or a blocked chopper area is more likely. If it washes and then sits full of dirty water, the drain path is the story.

Listen once. A hum with no water movement is not the same as silence. Write down which of those you hear, and whether the sink drains normally at the same time.

Older drains in older kitchens

Houses around Midtown, Frenchtown, and Indianhead often have a dishwasher tied into a sink tailpiece that is already slow. The machine then pumps into a line that sends water back into the tub or, worse, into the cabinet. A gurgling sink is a clue worth mentioning.

The drain hose should rise in a high loop under the counter before it drops to the sink. If someone recently replaced a disposal and the dishwasher misbehaves only after that, say so. The knockout plug on a new disposal is a classic reason for no drain.

Film on the glasses is often the water

Groundwater in this part of Florida leaves mineral on glass when the rinse is hot and the detergent is wrong for the load. Cloudy glasses are not automatically a failed heater. Etching from too much detergent looks similar and does not wash off.

If plates come out dirty in a stripe, an arm is probably not turning because something in the rack blocks it or the chopper area is packed with glass and seeds. Clear the obvious blockage. Leave the pump and the wiring alone.

Leaks need the floor dry first

A door gasket that is folded, a float switch stuck under a bit of debris, or a loose supply line at the inlet will all wet the kitchen. Southwood and newer Bradfordville kitchens often hide the machine behind a panel, so a small leak travels sideways before you see it.

Pull the kickplate only if you are comfortable and the machine is off. If you are not, stop at the filter and the door corners. Send the model, which is usually on the side of the door or the tub frame, and say whether the leak happens at fill or at the end of the cycle.

Questions about dishwasher repair

There is an inch of water in the bottom. Is that normal?

A small amount can remain in the sump. A tub you can see standing water across is not finished draining. Do not start another cycle on top of it.

Dishes are cloudy only on glass. Is the washer broken?

Often the glass is filmed or etched by detergent and minerals. If plates and plastic come out clean, start with detergent amount and a rinse aid before you assume the heater failed.

Can I use the sink while the dishwasher runs?

You can, but if the sink backs up while the dishwasher drains, the two are sharing a problem. Mention that when you describe the symptom.

The machine stopped halfway and the buttons do nothing.

Note any code, then cancel or kill power at the breaker for a minute if the floor is dry. If it returns to the same point in the cycle, it is repeating a fault, not waiting on you.
