Midtown kitchens were not drawn around today's appliances
The cottages and small houses between Thomasville Road and Monroe are full of kitchens that were efficient in another decade. A refrigerator alcove may be an inch too shallow for the model someone bought later. The condenser then sits against plaster, the machine runs all day, and the side wall gets warm.
Look at the gap above and behind before you assume the compressor is gone. A photo of how tight the alcove is tells the story faster than a list of brands.
Laundry that shares a room
Washers often live in a hall closet, a back porch that was enclosed, or a corner of the kitchen. The floor may be wood that flexes. A spin cycle then walks the machine into the drain hose or the supply valves.
If the washer only fails when the load is heavy, say that. If it will not fill at all, the valves behind a stack of storage are the first thing to mention, not the motor. Do not pull a full washer onto a soft floor to see the hoses.
Older drains and the dishwasher
Dishwashers added to these kitchens sometimes drain into sink plumbing that was never quick. The tub fills, tries to empty, and the sink gurgles. Dirty water returns to the dishwasher and the cabinet floor takes the rest.
Say whether a disposal was replaced recently. A new disposal with the knockout still in place is a known reason for a dishwasher that will not drain, and it shows up in remodeled Midtown kitchens.
Ranges in houses that have been rewired in stages
Some kitchens have a newer breaker panel and an older range receptacle. A range that is dead at every burner may be the circuit. One that lights three burners and not the fourth is the appliance. Check the breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off.
Gas ranges exist in some of the older houses. A lingering gas smell is a reason to leave and call the gas supplier, not a reason to keep clicking the igniter while you look up a model number.
